EPA Set To Release New Carbon Rules For Existing Power Plants on June 2

On June 2, the EPA is set to release the FIRST-EVER limits on carbon pollution for existing power plants.  Currently, power plants emit 40% of our carbon pollution per year!   Last year, the EPA issued standards on future power plants, which was  a significant step in fighting climate change.   Setting standards for existing power plants will mean unprecedented progress for climate justice!

Limiting carbon pollution from power plants will do more than just reduce carbon from our atmosphere.  It will also help promote green, renewable technology! In addition, states will have the opportunity to tailor their plan to meet the standards as long as the achieve equal (or greater!) reductions.

Even though the standards aren’t out yet, the fight has already started.   Forty-five senators, thirty Republicans and fifteen Democrats, have signed a letter urging the EPA to double the comment period from 60 days to 120 days, which would effectively delay issuance and implementation.   President Obama is putting the full weight of his office behind the new rules, however, sending EPA Administrator to speak with supporters and detractors alike in order to build support.  The Obama Administration sees this rule as a significant piece of his legacy and are hoping that it avoids the contentious debate that surrounded implementation of the Affordable Health Care Act.

When the rules are released, the public comment period will begin.  We will let you know when and where to send your comments in support of these important regulations!
