Lauren’s Letter to Senator Murphy

Dear Senator Murphy,

Thank you for standing up for the earth. I am a nine year old girl, who lives in West Hartford Connecticut. I love to play outside and read in my spare time. I love dogs and I have one of my own, an eight year old beagle named Joey. Enough about me, let’s get straight to the point.

The earth is very important to me. I don’t like what climate change is doing to the globe. I love to do things outside and I don’t want to see that perfectly good scene ruined. Some of my favorite animals, such as polar bears, are becoming extinct, and that would not only break my heart, but it would unbalance the food chain. When the Arctic melts, the sea level will rise, and places like Long Island and New York City will go underwater. If that happens, it will probably happen in about one hundred years and people in a couple of generations won’t be able to enjoy the beauty of the places we can enjoy now.

Not only is climate change damaging the earth, it also damages peoples health. People with asthma, after they run around for a bit in the summer, have to take many deep puffs from their inhaler. In factories, when the smoke billows out, it causes air pollution, leading to this. Where there is air pollution, there is climate change.

I tried to get people to help me in my own little way. I spoke with our Student Council about this, and they said they would do what they could. I am hoping that we will be able to help make a difference. The people I told understood what was happening, and were worried about it once the people I asked to tell them about it explained what would happen.

It would be great if at your speech you spoke about the tragedies of climate change, and what we can do to help prevent it, such as carpooling with friends or walk or bike ride if there is a short distance to travel.

An Earth LOVER,

Lauren Shilansky
