Rocky Hill: PASSED! # 33 to date.
On Monday December 4th, the Rocky Hill Town Council voted unanimously to pass an ordinance prohibiting fracking wastes. Extra points to Mayor Claudia Baio who supported the measure with a ‘Ban Fracking Waste” sign in her home’s front lawn!
Towns are stepping up and moving forward to protect their residents and properties from toxic, radioactive waste! See upcoming events for December and January and join with these incredible citizens and elected leaders who are making it happen.
If you live in any of the below-listed towns, your emails, calls and comments to town leadership are needed now. Please contact your council members, selectmen or aldermen, letting them know you want a local ordinance banning fracking waste to pass in your town!
New Haven:
The City Services and Environmental Committee held a public hearing with a presentation by Food & Water Watch and New Haven Environmental Advisory Committee Chair, Laura Cahn. New Haven’s Corporate Counsel is now reviewing the ordinance language and will come back to the CS&E Committee with recommendations. CS&E will then vote on whether to pass the ordinance out of committee, allowing the full Board of Alders to schedule a final vote. If you reside in New Haven, Contact Alderman Sal DeCola, Chair of the SC&E Committee, your local alderman and Mayor Harp.
West Hartford:
The Energy Task Force has already discussed, and at their Dec 13 meeting will vote to host a community forum. Date TBD, but potentially Jan 10th or 11th.
Madison:
The Board of Selectmen will be hosting a presentation at their December 18th meeting at 7 pm at the Madison Town Hall, 8 Campus Drive in Madison. Madison residents are needed to show up and support the passing of an ordinance, and specifically ask the BoS to schedule a Public Hearing in January.
Avon:
A presentation was held at the Avon Public library and attended by several town leaders. Comments of support were made by Councilwoman Heather Maguire at a follow-up town council meeting. The Avon Clean Energy Task Force will have a presentation on December 20th at the Avon Town Hall in Building 1, Avon Room, at 60 West Main Street in Avon. Another presentation will be given at the next Town Council Mtg to be held on January 4th.
Southbury:
A presentation was given to the Board of Selectmen and they may formally start discussion at their next meeting on December 21st at the Southbury Town Hall, Room 205 A, 501 Main Street in Southbury.
South Windsor:
The town’s attorney has requested a presentation for the Town Council, with date TBD, possibly Jan 2nd. (the first date requested for December was booked).
Darien:
The Board of Selectman will have this on their agenda for the first time for January 8th at 7 pm. Please attend this meeting to show support.
Redding:
A legal petition initiative was conducted in town. signatures will be turned in later this month to the town clerk. Once she has verified that signees are registered Redding voters, she will forward the “certified” petition to the Board of Selectmen, who must then call a special town meeting within 21 days. Only persons who attend that night will be able to vote. Please alert friends and family and ask them to plan on coming out to vote at this special town meeting, date TBD for January or February.
Greenwich:
Several committees have reviewed and this now needs to go before the RTM. Please send a short email to the RTM, politely asking them how much more time is needed for this to be addressed at a full RTM meeting. It has been 6 months, and 3 committees have reviewed so far.
Wethersfield:
The town council voted to refer the ordinance to committee. Committee members need to be appointed by the newly elected Mayor and then call a first meeting date. Emails to the Wethersfield Town Council are encouraged.
Guilford:
A large group of residents have been discussing supporting an ordinance in town. Formal action has not yet been taken to engage the Board of Selectmen. A public presentation will be held at the Guilford Library on January 16th at 6:30 pm. Please plan on attending.
Simsbury:
Residents collected over 600 petition signatures at the polls on election day on a legal petition that can call a town referendum. These residents are currently discussing with various town committees and leaders, seeking their support, including the Conservation Commission and Clean Energy Task Force.
Manchester:
St John’s Episcopal Church and the Unitarian Universalist Society are collaborating together with upcoming meetings in Dec & January 21st at St. John’s.
