Introducing Interfaith Eco-Kids

Would youth in your congregation want to be part of Interfaith Eco-Kids?

“Interfaith Eco Kids” began three years ago at Immanuel Church, UCC in Hartford. Lynn Johnson from Immanuel’s Environmental Action Committee visited the Youth Group to ask if anyone was interested in working on the No Straws November Campaign. Since then we’ve participated in three no-straw campaigns, and hosted an “Earth Week Bike” raising over $3,000 for Foodshare.

This summer we are planning a beach clean up with Save the Sound and we are now an affiliate of IREJN and Connecticut Interfaith Power & Light. The Interfaith Eco Kids are organized in chapters inside Youth Groups in congregations. Immanuel Eco Kids are our founding chapter, and we have two Youth Coordinators, Janelle Martinez and Grace Donahue.

We are helping to organize a second chapter, Quaker Eco Kids. We want to expand to have Jewish Eco Kids, Muslim Eco Kids, all kinds of Eco Kids! We are very excited that Sena Wazer, the Co-President of Sunrise CT, has become our Youth Advisor! Sena wants to help more young people be able to express their concern about our climate crisis.

If you think your congregation may be interested, please go to your youth and ask. They will tell you what they want to focus on. They can join one of our campaigns, or create their own. For more information please contact Lynn Johnson, the Adult Advisor at lynnsilverwolf@gmail.com. We hope to hear from you!
