Update on State Legislation – June 2

SB 753 – An Act to Ban Fracking Waste

It passed the Senate and will move to the House now.  The language of the bill is strong – as strong as the language passed by all of the towns that passed local ordinances. It is very important that this language not be weakened in any way, so call your representative and tell them that they need to vote for the bill as written with no additional amendments to weaken it.

HB 7156 – Offshore Wind Mandate

This bill would mandate the purchase of 2000 MW of offshore wind for CT by 2030.   It is an important first step in moving CT to a renewable energy future, plus it contains some of the strongest labor and environmental protections regarding offshore wind in our region..  This bill passed the House on May 14 – we need to get it called in the Senate for a vote.

Energy Efficiency Funding

The language to stop the diversion of $54 million in energy efficiency funding was NOT included in the Green Economy Act, so we need to find other avenues to save this funding.  Our partners are looking at other opportunities, but please call your legislators and tell them that you oppose this theft – we pay into that fund in our electric and natural gas bill for the express purpose of supporting energy efficiency and renewable energy efforts.  It creates jobs here in CT and improves the lives of our residents by lowering their energy bills and making their homes more comfortable.  For our lower-income brothers and sisters, this is a justice issue.  For all of us, this is a much-needed response to the climate crisis.
